Dhanteras Legends & Meaning
- A prophecy once foretold that the young prince, son of King Hima, would die from a snake bite on the fourth day of marriage. Despite the warning, the prince got married. His wife, aware of the prophecy, kept him awake that night. She placed piles of silver coins and gold ornaments at the entrance and lit many lamps around the house. When Yama, the god of death, arrived in the form of a snake, the brilliance of the lamps and ornaments distracted him. Unable to find the prince, he left. In this way, the young wife saved her husband’s life. This is why lamps are kept burning throughout Dhanteras night.
- Another tale tells how gods and demons churned the ocean. During this churning, Dhanvantri, the physician of the gods, emerged carrying a pitcher of nectar (Amrit). Because of this, the day was also named Dhanvantri-triyodashi. Therefore, Devotees believe worship on this day grants health and prosperity.
